volatility around the world that it has called into question some of the policies that barack obama has put into place. to the extent that he can highlight that, i think mitt romney wants to do that. he wants to call into question the president's judgment on an area where he had a good lead, where the president has passed that commander in chief test in 2008 getting elected to the presidency. that's what he's trying to do. i think it's mostly about the economy. >> i'm going to agree with jonathan here. this is an election certainly about the economy. when they go into the voting booths on voting day, it's about the economy. i think romney has the opportunity here and needs to take it. to link obama's economic policies with his foreign policies, i don't think he should go after romney on the philosophical differences between his foreign policy and obama's. frankly, it's hard to figure out what obama's foreign policy philosophy is. he needs to talk about broken promises and incompetent and link the broken promises and incompetent and the foreign policy to those in the economic policy. i thoug

mitt romney has hammered president obama about job growth. elect me, i can turn the economy around. but today the rationale for his entire campaign is crumbling. the new job numbers are out and unemployment has dropped to 7.8%. under 8% for the first time since president obama first came into office. that's progress on jobs and that's good for america. but it's absolutely demolishes a favorite romney talking point. >> three years later, unemployment is still above 8%. >> we've gone 41 months with unemployment above 8%. >> we've had 42 straight months with unemployment above 8%. >> still 8% with over 43 straight months. >> today, that talking point disintegrated and president obama has a strong record to campaign on. >> this morning we found out that the unemployment rate has fallen to the lowest level since i took office. but today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> now, governor romney issued a statement today saying, quote, this is not what a rea

obama and governor romney will meet on the stage at the university of colorado in their first debate where tens and millions of americans watching at home. the debate will showcase two competing visions for america, two conflicting views of government, a clash of ideas about the kind of democracy we want. it could hardly be a more stark choice for the country. but this is also personal it's about two men and who are and how they will connect with the american people. no doubt about it, this is a big night. join me now, cynthia tucker and erin mcpike who covers the campaign for real clear politics. thank you both for coming on the show. >> thank you. >> thanks for having me. >> erin, let me go to you first. mitt romney is behind. what does he need to cover up? what does he need to do tonight? >> he needs to show, especially middle class voters, that he has a plan. we've already heard from the obama campaign that the president is likely to push mitt romney on specifics and in the past couple of days he has telegraphed that we might see more specifics like immigration, especially tax po

is team obama and the pentagon not helping our fighting men and women cast their absentee ballots? we will have that story. >>> the day after mitt romney politely and respectfully cleaned obama's clock president obama tried to quickly turn the page. cnbc's amin javers has more. >> reporter: the day after the debate strategy tells you which campaign this they won last night and which did not win. mitt romney spoke on tv after the network newscasts had gone on the air. that forced the tv networks through the day and the evening broadcast this is evening to use pictures from last night's debate again and again. president barack obama, however, had two rallies including one in denver, colorado where he had sort of a chance to do a do-over from last night. take a listen. >> when i got onto the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. but it couldn't have been mitt romney, because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know

the next debate in new york for team obama. and of course, it all happened right here in battleground, colorado. it's a state that's been trending quickly from red to purple in recent years. will the first debate keep it from going blue again for the president and going back to red? good morning again from the university of denver. thursday, october 4th. 2012. this is "daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. a big hour ahead, including daily reaction from orrin hatch, governor martin o'malley and many more. let's get to the first read of the morning. in what may be the most substantive debate in the era of televised presidential debates. mitt romney performed as if his campaign depended on it, while a surprisingly subdued president obama allowed his challenger to dictate the terms of the debate. from the start, romney displayed confidence and demanding the presence on stage. he oned up the president on his own wedding anniversary shoutout. >> i want to wish you, sweetie, happy anniversary. >> congratligss on your anniversary. i'm sure this was the most romantic place you could imagine, here w

this video we have seen before, covered extensively by the media five years ago, when obama first ran for office. those details did not stop the daily caller and some others from asserting the tape would shake up the campaign. >> people ask me whether they thought raves the reason the response was so slow. i said, well, no this administration was color blind in its incompetence. but, but everyone here knows that the disaster and the poverty happened long before the hurricane hit. >> and then the "huffington post" released what they consider their own bombshell tape, showing paul ryan at what his campaign says was on open forum, this was just last year, 2011. ryan's remarks are now being compared to romney's 47% comment. >> the good news is survey after survey, poll after poll, still shows that we are a center-right 70/30 country. 70% of americans want the american dream. they believe the american idea. only 30% want the welfare state. >> and republicans are seizing on what vice president joe biden said at a campaign event in north carolina. that set off another war of words. >> ho

in five years that barack obama and mitt romney are going to be face-to-face in what the local newspaper is headlining as the duel in denver. joining me now for our daily fix, chris cizilla, msnbc contributor and managing editor of post politics.com. first of all, this, the big face-off, let's talk about the state of the race. we have new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll numbers showing a slight tightening in the race. fou looks as though mitt romney is in the national polls slightly narrowing the gap. other problems within those numbers, problems for romney. >> yeah. i mean first of all let me say i love duel in denver. i'm a big fan of that one. i think andrea, look, last week there was a ton of polling both in swing states and nationally that i think caught barack obama sort of at the apex of the bounce he had received post-convention and post a couple bad weeks for mitt romney and mitt romney at the nader of where he could possibly be in a race where you have the country as divided as it is. the fact that things are moving back towards at the national level, 49/46, i think should

. is there such a thing as a commanding lead? if so he has it. president obama's job approval rating is at 49%. 48% disapprove of his performance. 40% believe the country is headed in the right direction. the highest number we recorded in 3 1/2 years. 53% still believe the country is on the wrong track. the president leads romney by three. what is helping romney tighten the race? a fact true all year continues to be true. republican voters are more interested in this election than democrats. the president has a larger lead. he is up seven. the problem for him is a lack of enthusiasm of hispanics and young voters. romney has to do things to make people substantially change the way people feel about him. his approval rating is still under water. the lowest for any presidential nominee at this point in time other than george h.w. bush in 1992. romney is out with his second straight to camera ad in the direct effort to undo damage of the remarks. >> more americans live in poverty than when president obama took office. we should measure our compassion by how many fellow americans are able to get good p

the country in that the unemployment rate went down and i would say good news politically for president obama because now the talking point that republicans have used effectively for quite some time to say, you know, 42 straight months of an unemployment over 8%, unemployment had been over 8% every month since barack obama took office, they no longer can say that. to your point it didn't drop to 4%, it's still 7.8%. i would say if you ask barack obama on the day he took office if he -- if he thought unemployment at 7.8% would be okay in the month before he needed to run for re-election, he would not be happy with that number, but it's about the trend line, the trend line suggests and again, one month is not determinative but suggests that perhaps things are the economy is strengthening a little bit. that's the argument obama needs. he needs data points to say it's not perfect, i know that, not everything i've done is perfect to fix it, but it's slowly but surely a lurching toward getting better. >> the republicans will focus on the slowly part of that, only 114,000 new jobs added, anemic by a

of the current president of the united states. this guy named barack obama. romney didn't offer any additional specifics, so it's hard to tell if he has really any disagreement with the president over afghanistan. the same goes for iran. >> i'll put the leaders of iran on notice that the united states and our friends and allies will prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapons capability. >> if you believe the new mitt romney, he's going to prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon. president obama says the same thing, but mitt romney doesn't say how had he will prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon. he also doesn't tell you who is advising him on all of these matters. one of his foreign policy advisers is john bolten, who never bet a bomb he couldn't launch. he told fox news, the better way to prevent iran from getting nuclear weapons is to attack the program directly. oh, boy. another romney adviser, here's a dandy. state department official robert joseph. joseph, you're wondering where do woe know this guy from? he's been calling for an attack on iran since 2006. and you might remember

obama. the unemployment rate for september falling to 7.8%, the first time the jobless rate has been below 8% since january of '09 when president obama took office. now the big question is, will this change the narrative of the presidential campaign that was against the president after the debate? this morning we're seeing both campaigns end candidates energized, although for very different reasons. president obama was first trying to shake off his lackluster debate performance. mitt romney trying to capitalize on his new momentum. and he's got a new response to that video where he talked about the 47% going beyond what his line has been that he spoke inelegantly. >> well, clearly in a campaign with hundreds, if not thousands of sechs and question and answer sessions, now and again you're going to say something that doesn't come out right. in this case i said something that's completely wrong. i absolutely believe, however, that my life has shown that i care about 100% and that's been demonstrated throughout my life and this whole campaign is about the 100%. when i become president,

race! mitt smoked obama! metaphorically, of course, mormons can't smoke! and folks, after last night's debate in denver our image of these two men has completely changed. and i am not the only one who knows it. >> it looked like romney wanted to be there and president obama didn't want to be there. >> stephen: yes! it was like obama wasn't even there. he hasn't done this poorly since he debated clint eastwood. (laughter) meanwhile-- (cheers and applause) meanwhile, romney was the alpha mitt, slapping obama around. and, anyone else who got in mitt away. >> i'm sorry, jim, i'm going to stop the subsidy to pbs. i will stop other things. i like pbs. i like big bird, i actually like you too. but i'm not going to keep on spending money for things to borrow from china to pay for it. >> stephen: he just told the moderator who works at pbs, i'm going to throw your ass out on the street, old man! you-- (cheers and applause) you, not only you-- but all those freeloading muppets. that takes not just one ball, but two, two enormous balls! (applause) but, folks, as much as i enjoyed the triumph of

obama leading 49% to 46% among likely voters. again, within the margin of error and closer than it was two weeks ago. on the direction of the country, 40% say we're heading in the right direction. 53% say things are on the wrong track. 40% is the highest mark for this question in 3 1/2 years. there's also growing optimism about the economy. 57% say it's improving. that's the highest number this poll has recorded on this question. one thing not going the president's way here, his handling of the situations in egypt and libya. more people disapprove than approve on that question. as for mr. romney, it appears he's still paying for the comments about the 47%, 51% of respondents to this nbc poll say recent impressions made by the republican candidate make him less favorable. they view him less favorably. 28% say more favorably. >>> both presidential candidates were off the trail as they prepared for tonight's debate. the president spent the past couple of days working with his team in nevada. took a quick break to visit the hoover dam. why not while you're there. mitt romney was in

% for the first time in the obama presidency hitting 7.8% for september. but the raw job gains are tepid. will the below 8% news do much to change the economic perceptions of undecided voters in the final weeks before the election? meanwhile a shifted swagger as mitt romney waits to see if his numbers swing up after a decisive debate. he certainly has a spring in his step out on the campaign trail. on the whole 47% comment that never came up at the debate romney says he was wrong. as for the president, he put some mileage between himself and the mile high city with much more fiery talk than anything we heard from him at the actual debate. but is the president's tough talk too little too late? good morning from washington. it's friday, october 5th, 2012. this is "the daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. we'll have much more on the new jobs numbers in minutes with economist mark zandi, texas senator kay bailey hutchison is here, and an exclusive this morning senior adviser to the president david plouffe. but first right to my first reads of the morning. we'll hear from the obama and romney camp

front, word today that the obama campaign and democratic allies raised $181 million in september. that is the most either side has raised in a month this election cycle. no word yet on the romney camp's monthly total, but the campaign does say it's collected more than $12 million in online donations since wednesday's debate. that's a lot. and it says it has seen bigger crowds on the trail since that debate. more on these stories throughout the next hour. >>> and tonight a newly confident mitt romney guess back on the stump in the sunshine state. he is holding a rally at 6:30 p.m. in apopka, florida, where he has been hammering the president's job record, despite a rise in national employment. with the romney campaign, garrett, is the governor sticking to his guns on the economy, or do the new numbers change things? >> milissa, the only new change is governor romney is going to have to retire one of his favorite lines, is the unemployment rate remaining above%. we expect that line to disappear. but focus will stay the same, with perhaps a bit more of a target, talking about the de

aggressive but i don't believe he was more presidential. i believe the president obama handled himself with that dignified reserve is his hallmark. anybody that expected him to come out in an aggressive in your face way has not been watching the president for these last four years. i thought the president was particularly strong tonight, especially in contrasting the two economic views of these candidates. president obama's view of how we fix our economy. much more in line with main strewn americans believe, the middle class believes. the things that president clinton used, balanced approach. opportunity and, i thought that governor romney really didn't do anything to dissuade the general public from the view that he would like to go back to the days of the bush tax cuts for the wealthy and hope that this time, instead of growing deficits, and growing unemployment, that it grows jobs. so governor romney really needed a game changer tonight. i hate to say this but i find myself agreeing with chris christie. governor romney really needed to turn the world upside down. he really need ad g

president obama took office in 2009. while the economy added a relatively modest 114,000 jobs in september, new revisions show that july and august saw a combined increase of 86,000 more jobs than originally reported. needless to say, those numbers put a certain pep back in president obama's step. >> more americans entered the work force, more people are getting jobs. now every month reminds us that we've still got too many of our friends and neighbors looking for work. today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> needless to say this ray of economic sunshine is punting a dent in governor romney's plan to end the week on top. how is the republican nominee reacting spinning away saying quote -- >> but other obama critics, perhaps furious that good economic news might derail the romney swagger, instead they opted for conspiracy theories regarding the satitions behind the unemployment numbers. former chairman and ceo of ge jack welch tweeted -- welch was backed i

is iran may not have a nuclear weapon. >> president obama said exactly the same thing. he said it's unacceptable for iran to have a nuclear weapon. so your red line is the same as his. >> so that's the same. okay. surely there's a difference on israel and the palestinians. >> i'm recommit america to the goal of a democratic, prosperous palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with the jewish state of israel. >> no, i guess that's the same again, but it is quite different from what mr. romney himself said behind closed doors back at that infamous fund raiser in boca raton just a few weeks ago. >> i look at the palestinians not wanting to see peace anyway for political pumpses, committed to the destruction and elimination of israel, and these thorny issues, and i say there's just no way. and so what you do so you say you move things along the best you can. you hope for some degree of stability. >> when he tried it on his own, he even managed to bungle the british olympics. as a new obama ad keenly reminds us. >> there are a few things that were disconcerting. >> i

after colon surgery. [laughter] oh, come on. if we're giving an obama space gasm award i can do a tight end jeek. this is one my favorites, one "los angeles times" story involved a councilwoman, named laura chick, who was unhappy as what she saw gender based incentive from her colleagues. "the los angeles times" headline was quote, chick accuses some of her male colleagues of sexism. [laughter] homicide victims rarely talk to police. [laughing] totally serious. i'm totally serious. hispanics ace spanish test. [laughter] and the last one, midget sues grocer, cites belittling remarks. [laughter] all those are real. so for some of you who have attended this event as i have over the years our annual funniest video segment is truly unique and is often the highlight. normally it has nothing to do with bias. sometimes nothing to do even with politics. it shows we're basically shameless enough to do anything at all we can to amuse you. so just plain funny stuff we found while trolling the airwaves. some of it is gaffs that we've caught. sometimes it is other pieces we blatantly steal with full

, which still has obama in the lead, and the obama campaign is getting a lot of attention with this brand-new ad featuring big bird. >> criminals, glutens of greed and the evil genius who towered over them? one man has the guts to speak his name. >> big bird. big bird. big bird. >> it's me, big bird. >> big, yellow, a menace to our economy. mitt romney knows it's not wall street you have to worry about, it's sesame street. >> i want to bring in anne kornblut, deputy national politics editor for "washington post," and "usa today" politics reporter jackie kucinich. good morning. >> good morning. >> good to see you both. >> good morning. >> anne, let me start with you. there are a number of polls that show nationally a number of different things. what's the big picture here? is it that this is still the horse race? >> i think that's exactly the takeaway, that regardless of what the variations may be in a couple of the, really, the big two polls you mentioned, gallup and pew, it's a close race. i think there was a perception coming out of the conventions and particularly with obama getting so

'm confident because i see you here on a day like this. this is unbelievable. >> president obama in san francisco last night sounded a new urgency, trying to get people to vote. >> i need you in this election. the next 29 days. we cannot afford to be complacent and we cannot afford to be sitting. >> buckeye battleground, obama and romney both in ohio tonight. the state that matters most to republicans. first, romney kicks off the day at a family farm in iowa where he will be speaking minutes from now. and the battle over big bird, the president turns his attack into a punch line and a commercial, as sesame workshop and senator john mccain cried foul over the obama campaign's new bird ad. >> elmo is -- has been seen in a white suburban he's driving for the border. oscar is hide out in his trash can. we're cracking down on them. governor romney's plan is to let wall street run wild again but he's going to bring the hammer down on sesame street. >> one thing that president obama can't run on is his record, and so big bird, i guess, is a fun thing to talk about. >> good day. i'm andrea mitc

obama hits him hard with a brand-new ad. we'll show it to you. >>> winter weather now. many parts of the country will make up this morning to an arctic blast from the north. bill's forecast is straight ahead. >>> and 48 straight. drew breezes into the record books. this is a big one. >>> very good morning to you. i'm veronica de la cruz. this is "first look" on msnbc. 29 days and counting. there is less than a month to go in the race for the white house, and right now, both candidates are on the road. while the president campaigns in california, mitt romney spent sunday in florida before his major foreign policy speech in virginia today. nbc's tracie pots has more in washington. tracie, good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, veronica, good morning. even with those jobs numbers that came out friday helping president obama, we are still seeing mitt romney with a boost after the debate, and today he will argue that under the president, america is weaker against enemies abroad. mitt romney gives a big foreign policy speech in virginia today, but over the weekend in florida, he focused

and obama's senior adviser david axelrod praised it as well suggesting it was oscar-worthy, though not worthy of the white house. due to some basic problems with simple veracity. >> i'm not looking for a $5 trillion tax cut. i can't understand how you can cut medicare $716 billion for current recipients of medicare. pre-existing conditions are covered under my plan. an unelected board, appointed board who are going to decide what kind of treatments you ought to have. >> not true, not true, not true, not true. and since mr. romney got the last word at the debate last night, why don't we give the last word today to the president. >> he knows full well that we don't want what he's been selling for the last year. so governor romney may dance around his positions, but if you want to be president, you owe the american people the truth. >> well said, mr. president. let's get right to our panel. in washington form eer communications director and msnbc political analyst karen finney, and in philadelphia professor james peterson of lehigh university and a regular contributor to thegrio.com.

of times, i'm like did he say what? nch this morning the obama campaign is out amplifying the says my street not wall street adark. the ad is not going to air in a single battleground state, it's only being bought on national cable, so they tell me. take a look at it. >> bernie madoff, criminals, gluttons of greed and the evil genius who towered over them. one man has the guts to speak his name. >> big bird, big bird, big bird. >> it's me, big bird. >> mitt romney knows it's not wall street you have to worry about, it's "sesame street." >> it's six days later, the obama campaign seems to be looking back at the campaign and not able to turn the page after the debate. maybe it's part of the entire qualm pain conversation. you have to ask yourself, every time they bring up the debate, is that good for obama? or is that good for romney. >>> driving rain didn't keep romney from -- >> people w07bd why it is i'm so confident that we're going to win. i'm confident because i see you here on a stay like this, this is unbelievable. >>> unemployment has droppeded below the 8% mark. we wondered if

barack obama like you've never heard from him before. >> oh, yes, that was the introduction last night before fox aired tape of a 2007 speech by then-candidate obama to a group of black ministers in which he criticized the response to hurricane katrina and provided certain analysts with an excuse for a little racial fear mongering. >> what's happening down in new orleans? where's your dollar? where's your stafford act money? makes no sense. tells me the bullet hasn't been taken out. >> do you notice a change in the way he delivers this speech? >> this accent is absurd. this is not the way obama talks. in is not a dog whistle. this is a dog siren. >> it's incendiary -- >> yes, it's just about as incendiary as two white dudes debates how black is too black in a black man's speech. indeed, fox ran with it all the way into the morning on "fox and friends". >> we watched president obama for 3 hchl years. i don't think he's governed in a race this way at all. i think that was going to be an issue. should have been an issue in '08. does anyone think president obama is more towards one race? i

dinner through my obama phone. this is an obama phone. i am a down the phone guide in 2012. when brent bozell asked me to emcee tonight's dinner is a little bit uncomfortable because you can't trust brent bozell or the people he surrounds himself with. they would sell out their mothers for one cheap laugh and then move on merrily. but i thought about it for a moment and i almost decline, but i thought, i'll go ahead. there's a free dinner and free drinks in it. so i go ahead and take him up on the author. and that is after my work in talk radio, which is a very unstable business and i could be fired pretty much any moment as has been proven at least once already. [laughter] [applause] so got to keep some connections in town just in case friday to get the news at 12:05 about which is how it happens there. but i do love the video research center and i know a lot of us do because these guys don't follow the rules and i don't follow the rules as prescribed, has tattooed me in catholic school didn't really take very well. and conventional wisdom has it that, you know, if you can't beat them

-- the debate. tell you how nbc's "meet the press," senior obama campaign adviser robert gibbs conceded the president could have done better and also took aim at governor romney. >> it's not rocket science to believe that the president was disappointed in the expectations that he has for himself. but, look, i think part of that was because as i said earlier, we met a new mitt romney. speaker gingrich was pretty eloquent in running during the primaries in saying that mitt romney will say absolutely anything to get elected. >> former speaker and republican candidate newt gingrich said this morning that president obama has no excuse. >> the president of the united states had 90 minutes. now, if he had done his homework and actually prepared and actually studied romney, why didn't he say it? i mean why didn't he take romney head-on? the job of the president is supposed to be competent and be able to stand up for what he believes in and to be able to articulate what's wrong. mitt romney walked over him. >>> right now, president obama is on his way to los angeles for two days of fundraising i

romney and barack obama are holed up in last-minute debate prep for tomorrow night's main event. speaking to a volunteer nevada yaeds, president obama made it sound like a college cram session minus the no doze and pizza. >> basically they're keeping me indoors all the time. it's a drag. they're making me do my homework. >> governor romney, however, may have twice the work load. he'll have two opponents on stage tomorrow, president obama and himself. eugene robinson write in "the washington post" -- it prompts to be an epic clash. mitt romney versus mitt romney. oh. and president obama will be there too. this conundrum of what we'll call the paradox of the mittens, dates back to 1994 when senator ted kennedy dropped this debate heat rock. >> on the question of the choice issue, i have supported the row v raid wade, i am pro choice, my opponent is multiple choice. >> so which bubble will the multiple choice candidate fill in on tomorrow night's test? which mitt will triumph on stage. even members of the conservative establishment aren't sure. bill o'reilly conceded mitt romney is a mystery

this. this is unbelievable. >> so, the obama campaign trying to detour romney's road to 1600 pennsylvania avenue through "sesame street." the president hitting romney on the stump. >> for all you moms and kids out there, you should have confidence that, finally, somebody is cracking down on big bird. elmo has been seen in a white suburban. he's driving for the border. >> and also, in a new ad that's all the talk on the trail. >> bernie madoff, ken lay, dennis kozlowski, criminals, glutens of greed and the evil genius who towered over them? one man has the guts to speak his name. >> big bird. big bird. big bird. >> it's me, big bird. >> did you see the new ad put out by the president, the re-elect obama campaign? big bird. big bird. what is that all about? >> we get straight to it now with our tuesday political power panel. msnbc contributor jonathan capehart, also an opinion writer for "the washington post." msnbc analyst karen finney, also a columnist for "the hill." and republican strategist john brae bender. karen, i want to start with you. that pew poll for swing states a
